Outside the recording studio, troop entertainment took up the lion’s share of the year. In their various appearances both stateside and abroad, the sisters were reunited with Bing Crosby and Abbott and Costello. They performed with Carmen Miranda and rising star Judy Garland, and some performances included Frank Sinatra, Ethel Merman, Bob Hope, Rudy Vallee, Eddie Cantor, and others.

One of the most poignant and defining memories of the trio’s performances for American troops took place in August of that year. During a show for 5,000 men preparing to ship out for the Pacific, the ranking officer handed Patty a note. The show stopped as she silently read for a moment, then tearfully informed the men that Japan had surrendered. No response was forthcoming until she broke the pause by declaring, “This is really true.”[25] As she broke down, the throng of servicemen erupted in cheers. Before that, an invasion of the Japanese mainland seemed inevitable, and many of the men in the audience certainly would have been killed or wounded in such a campaign.
